Following winter rains, the desert comes alive as wildflowers burst into bloom. The best place to celebrate this colorful season is at the Coachella Valley Wildflower Festival, held on Saturday, March 5, from 9 am to 4 pm at the Santa Rosa & San Jacinto Mountains National Monument Visitor Center. The festival features wildflower viewing, interpretive hikes, a 5K trail run and mountain biking. Arts and crafts vendors, a sand sculpting exhibit, kids’ activities, live music, tasty food and a beer garden round out the festival, which is also the featured event this month for First Weekend Palm Desert.
THE SPORTING LIFE
Sports fans descend on the desert in March to watch the best professional tennis players in the world at the BNP Paribas Open at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, as well as the LPGA’s finest at the first “major” of the season, the ANA Inspiration golf tournament. Reserve your Palm Desert lodging and dining early if you’re going to be visiting during this popular season. If you’d like information on local golf courses or public tennis courts where you, too, can swing a racquet or golf club during your stay, be sure to stop by the Visitor Services counter inside Palm Desert City Hall.
